The Class of 1958 was privileged to have had a basketball team that was the best AA team in the entire state or North Carolina for both its junior and senior years.

Our basketball glory began in our junior year. After an undefeated 1956-57 season, the Tri-City Panthers, coached by Ray Rhodes, roared to capture their third tournament trophy. One of the outstanding players of the tournament was junior Panther center John Eggleston, who was later selected for the All-State team.

Our 1958 basketball team was the first to wear Morehead jerseys. The starting five consisted of 6'5" senior center John Eggleston, 6'2" forward Marsh Oakley, junior Donnie Craig at forward, and Bill Stein and Glenn Hopkins at guard. Reserve seniors included Everette Dunn and Ronald Harris.

The 1957-58 season culminated in a tremendous victory over Kinston at Durham. Our team brought home the state AA championship trophy for the seond straight year. Our center, John Eggleston, made the All-State team for the second consecutive year and was also named All-American. See the March, 1958 Clarion for details on the victory.
